Step 1: Find who represents you
Every Oregonian has one state senator and one state representative. Look yours up by address:
Write down both. You're contacting them every Friday.
Phone numbers and office addresses sit on each legislator's page.
Step 2: Call
Calls take ninety seconds. You'll usually reach a staffer or a voicemail. Both get logged.
Say this, in your own words:
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I live in [CITY], in the [Senator's/Representative's] district. My zip code is [ZIP].
I'm calling to ask [Senator/Representative NAME] to [Support the Responsible Data Center Development Act or Support a Three-Year Moratorium on No New Large Data Center Construction Permits].
This matters to me because [ONE SENTENCE — your power bill, your well, your farmland, your kid's future, our waterways, our natural environments ].
Can you tell me where [Senator/Representative NAME] stands on this?
If you get voicemail: leave the same message. Give your full name, city, and zip. Say your phone number slowly at the end.
If the staffer asks something you can't answer: "I don't know, but I'll follow up." Then email ordcd@ordcd.org and we'll help you find out.

Email works about as well as a call, provided it sounds like a person wrote it. Treat what follows as a skeleton. Fill in the brackets.

Common questions
My legislator already supports the Responsible Data Center Development Act. Should I still call? Yes. Supporters carry the bill, and legislators need to know someone is behind them. Thank them, then ask what they need.
My legislator is firmly opposed. Call anyway, and keep it civil. Opposed today is not opposed in committee. Offices track intensity as well as direction.
I'm nervous about calling. Start with email. Or call after hours, when nobody picks up and the voicemail still counts. The second call is always easier than the first.
